Key takeaways
- An SEO consultant diagnoses problems, sets priorities and guides the people who implement, whether that is your team, your developer or the consultant.
- Consulting is useful when you have people who can execute but need direction, or when you need an honest second opinion.
- No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google, as Google itself warns. Be careful with anyone who does.
- Good consulting leaves you with a clear plan and a team that understands it.
What does an SEO consultant do?
An SEO consultant reviews your website and market, finds what limits your visibility, and builds a prioritized plan to fix it. Depending on the agreement, the consultant also trains your team, reviews their work, advises on redesigns and migrations, and checks that agencies or freelancers you already pay are doing the right things.
Google's own page on whether you need an SEO lists what many SEOs provide: reviews of content and structure, technical advice on hosting, redirects, error pages and JavaScript, content development, keyword research, training, market expertise and, now, optimizing for generative AI. A consultant brings those skills without you hiring a full team. On the home page I explain how I work with business owners directly.

Sessions so your marketing team or writers apply SEO in their daily work.
Second opinion
An independent review of what your agency or freelancer proposes or reports.
Why is SEO consulting valuable for a business?
Because the most expensive SEO mistake is working hard on the wrong things. A consultant helps you spend the budget where it matters, avoid risky tactics and protect what already works, especially during redesigns. For businesses with an in-house team, a few hours of expert direction often achieve more than months of trial and error.
It is also a protection. Google is clear that no one can guarantee a #1 ranking, and warns against SEOs who claim special relationships with Google or priority submission. A consultant who follows Google's Search Essentials and explains the reasons behind each recommendation helps you tell real work from promises. The guide on how to choose an SEO consultant lists the questions to ask.
How is a consultant different from an agency?
An agency usually sells a monthly package and does the work with its own team. A consultant focuses on judgment: deciding what to do, reviewing quality and guiding whoever executes. Many consultants, including me, also implement. The difference is that you work directly with the expert, not through an account manager.
The consultant vs agency vs in-house guide compares the three options by cost, speed and control.
Direction is what makes the curve bend
SEO compounds only when the work goes to the right pages, in the right order, without breaking what already ranks. The chart shows the general shape of that compounding next to ads on the same budget.
Both channels get $2,000 a month. Ads deliver from day one and stay flat; SEO starts slow and compounds. Illustrative model, not a forecast or a promise. Assumptions are listed under the charts.

When should a business hire an SEO consultant?
Hire one when traffic dropped and nobody knows why, before a redesign or migration, when you have a marketing team that needs direction, when you are about to hire an agency and want to know what to ask, or when you are paying for SEO and cannot tell whether it is working.
- Your team can execute but is not sure what to prioritize.
- You are planning a new website, platform or domain.
- You pay an agency and the reports do not show leads or revenue.
- You want to learn enough SEO to make good decisions yourself.
How much does an SEO consultant cost?
My SEO consulting is $25 an hour, with 20-hour blocks from $500. A 90-day SEO strategy roadmap starts at $600 and a migration plan at $900. You can start with a free 30-minute diagnosis call, and consulting can be combined with any monthly plan if you later want me to do the work as well.

Frequently asked questions
Does an SEO consultant do the work or just advise?
It depends on the agreement. I can advise only, implement everything, or split the work with your team.
How long does an SEO consulting engagement last?
Some are a single session or a roadmap. Others are monthly blocks of hours for ongoing questions and reviews.
Can a consultant review my current agency?
Yes. An independent review of strategy, reports and deliverables is one of the most common reasons owners call a consultant.
Do I need to be technical to work with a consultant?
No. A good consultant explains every recommendation in plain language and gives your developer or team the technical details.
Can you work with my team in Spanish?
Yes. I work in English and Spanish, which helps companies with teams or customers in Latin America and the US.
