Where my local experience comes from: I work on Google Business Profiles at scale for a team serving 600+ US car dealerships (average profile grade 78.8 C to 91.9 A across 436 stores) and on the Maps visibility of a dental clinic in Medellín. See the dealership case study.
What is SEO for home service businesses?
It is the work that puts a plumber, electrician, cleaner, landscaper or pest control company in the map results and the top organic results when nearby homeowners search. It covers your Business Profile, your service and city pages, your reviews and the speed of your site on a phone, because the goal is a call, not a visit.
It is the same method I explain on the SEO consultant home page, adjusted to businesses that drive to the customer instead of the other way around.
The three kinds of searches that pay your bills
Home service searches fall into three groups, and each one needs a different page and a different answer:
- Emergencies: “emergency plumber”, “electrician open now”, “water heater leaking”. The searcher wants a phone number in seconds. Your profile hours, a tap-to-call button and a fast page decide it.
- “Near me” and city searches: “pest control near me”, “house cleaning in Plano”. Google looks at relevance, distance and prominence, as it explains in its local ranking tips.
- Planned jobs: “panel upgrade cost”, “lawn aeration schedule”. These people compare, so a clear service page with prices or ranges, photos and reviews wins the job.
How should a service-area business set up its Google profile?
If customers do not come to your address, Google asks you to hide it and list service areas instead: cities or ZIP codes, up to 20, covering about two hours of driving at most. Use your real business name with no keywords added, pick the right primary category and keep hours accurate, especially for emergency work.
These rules come from Google's help pages on service areas for service-area businesses and its guidelines for representing your business. Breaking them, for example with a virtual office address or “Best Plumber Dallas 24/7” as a name, is the fastest route to a suspended profile and zero calls.
Can I create a page for every city I serve?
Yes, if each page is genuinely useful for that city: the jobs you do there, local details like housing age or water hardness, real project photos, reviews from customers in that area and how fast you arrive. Twenty copies with only the city name swapped count as doorway pages, which Google treats as spam.
Google's spam policies name doorway pages directly. I write city pages as part of SEO content writing, and I prefer ten strong pages over fifty thin ones.
What I work on for home service companies
Service-area profile
Hidden address, real service areas, correct categories, services list, photos and posts.
Calls as the main goal
Tap-to-call on every page, call tracking that keeps your number consistent and calls reported by source.
One page per service
Drain cleaning, panel upgrades, termite treatment: each with its own page, not a single list.
Useful city pages
Pages for the areas you actually serve, written with local detail instead of swapped names.
Honest review flow
A simple way to ask every happy customer for a review, with replies to every one.
Fast mobile site
A site that loads fast on a phone in a basement with one bar of signal.
How do reviews work for plumbers, electricians and cleaners?
Reviews are often what makes a homeowner pick you over the company just above you. Ask every customer, right after a good job, with a direct link. Never buy reviews, write them for customers or offer rewards only for positive ones. The FTC's 2024 final rule bans fake reviews and allows civil penalties.
The details are in the FTC final rule on fake reviews and testimonials. If you run several trades, the same method applies across them; see my pages on HVAC SEO and roofing SEO for the specifics of those two.
How much does SEO for a home service business cost?
Most home service companies fit the Essential plan at $1,000 a month or Growth at $1,750 when they cover many cities or trades. A local audit costs $450 and new city or service pages cost $90 each. Plans are month to month, and the first step is a free 30-minute diagnosis.

Frequently asked questions
Have you worked with plumbing or electrical companies?
Not as named clients. I apply the same local SEO and Business Profile method I use for car dealerships and a dental clinic, adapted to service-area businesses.
Should I show my home address on Google?
No. If customers do not visit you, Google asks service-area businesses to hide the address and list the areas they serve.
Can I rank in a city where I have no office?
Often in organic results, with a useful city page. The map pack depends heavily on distance, so results there are harder outside your base area.
Do you track phone calls?
Yes. Calls are the main conversion for trades, so I set up call tracking and report calls by source every month.
Do you guarantee first place on Google Maps?
No. Nobody can honestly guarantee rankings. I show what I will do, what changed and what it produced.
