What is AI search optimization, and why should a business care?

People now ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews for recommendations. AI search optimization is the work of making sure your business is one of the sources those answers trust and cite.

Key takeaways

  • AI search optimization, also called GEO or AEO, helps your business get cited inside AI answers, not just ranked in a list of links.
  • Google says there are no special requirements for AI Overviews: normal SEO fundamentals are what make a page eligible.
  • AI answers lean on clear, specific pages and on what other trusted sites say about you.
  • Fewer people click when an AI summary appears, so being the cited source matters more than before.

What is AI search optimization?

AI search optimization is the work of making your business easy for AI tools to find, understand and cite. It includes being indexed by Google and AI crawlers, writing pages that answer questions clearly, keeping business facts consistent across the web and earning mentions on trusted sites. People also call it GEO, generative engine optimization, or AEO, answer engine optimization.

Traditional SEO aims for a position in a list of ten links. AI search aims for a mention inside an answer. When someone asks "which accountant in Austin handles small business taxes?", the answer may name three firms and link to a few pages. Your goal is to be one of them. The good news is that most of the work overlaps with good SEO, which is how I approach it, as explained on the home page.

How do AI answers decide what to cite?

AI tools search the web before answering, then pick pages that answer the question clearly and look trustworthy. Google says AI Overviews draw from pages that are indexed and eligible to show a snippet. ChatGPT search uses OpenAI's crawler, OAI-SearchBot. Clear answers, specific facts, consistent business details and outside mentions all make a page easier to cite.

Google's page on AI features and your website states that there are no additional requirements and no special markup needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode: a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. On the OpenAI side, its crawler documentation explains that OAI-SearchBot is used to surface websites in ChatGPT search results, so blocking it can keep you out. Nobody controls exactly which sources get chosen, which is why any promise of guaranteed AI citations should make you suspicious.

Why does AI search matter for a business now?

Because AI answers are taking attention that used to go to regular results. A Pew study of 68,879 Google searches found that people clicked a regular result in 8% of visits with an AI summary, versus 15% without one. If the answer itself names your competitor, many people will never scroll to your listing.

The Pew Research analysis also found that about one in five searches in March 2025 produced an AI summary, and that people clicked a link inside the summary in only 1% of those visits. That sounds discouraging, but it points to a clear strategy: be the business the answer names, and make sure the person who does click finds a page that converts.

For a holistic medical clinic in Texas, after fixing a technical block that hid the site from Google, the clinic started to appear in Google's AI results: 948 impressions in 28 days. The clinic case study explains the steps. It shows the main lesson: you cannot be cited if search engines cannot read you.

Why the same work keeps paying

A clear, trusted page can bring visitors from Google, from the map and from AI answers at the same time, without paying per click. Ads do not earn AI citations. The chart shows how organic work compounds compared with ads on the same budget.

Monthly leads with the same budget every month

Both channels get $2,000 a month. Ads deliver from day one and stay flat; SEO starts slow and compounds. Illustrative model, not a forecast or a promise. Assumptions are listed under the charts.

Which businesses should invest in AI search optimization?

Businesses whose customers research before buying: professional services, healthcare, home services with big tickets, software, e-commerce with complex products and anyone selling to other businesses. If your customers ask questions like which is the best or how do I choose, they are likely asking AI tools too.

  • Customers compare several options before calling or buying.
  • Your services have common questions you answer every day on the phone.
  • Your website says little that is specific. Google's helpful content guidance rewards clear, first-hand information.
  • You want to know if AI tools mention you. Start with how to show up in ChatGPT and AI Overviews.

How much does AI search optimization cost?

An AI search audit with me costs $400. It checks crawler access, how AI tools describe your business today, which competitors they cite and what pages you need. Ongoing AI search work is included in the monthly SEO plans from $1,000, since it shares most of its foundation with technical, local and content SEO.

Frequently asked questions

Is GEO different from SEO?

It is an extension of SEO. The foundation is the same, but the goal shifts from ranking a link to being cited inside an answer.

Do I need an llms.txt file or special AI markup?

Google says no special files or markup are needed for AI Overviews. A clean, indexable site with clear content matters more.

Can you guarantee that ChatGPT will mention my business?

No. Nobody controls which sources AI tools choose. I can make your business easier to find, understand and cite, and measure the results.

How do I know if AI tools already mention me?

Ask them the questions your customers ask and note who they cite. Search Console and analytics also show some AI traffic.

Should I block AI crawlers?

Blocking the search crawlers can keep you out of AI answers. Training crawlers are a separate choice that does not affect search visibility.
