436 car dealerships, one measurable lift.

I work as a technical SEO specialist at an Inc. 5000 automotive marketing agency, on a team that runs SEO for hundreds of new and used car dealerships in the US. This is the fleet-wide result for every dealership with at least five months of work on record.

The challenge

A dealership competes for the same searches as every other rooftop in town, often including stores that sell the same brand. Google spreads visibility across all of them, so winning means more relevant pages for each city, model and service, a stronger Google Business Profile, and a technically clean site that Google can crawl every day as inventory changes.

What the work includes

  • City and model content. Pages built for the cities, models and services each store wants to win: 81,210 pages published across the group, 190 per dealership on average.
  • Google Business Profile. Audits and ongoing optimization of every rooftop's profile, plus a steady review cadence.
  • Technical SEO. Indexation, 404s and redirects, schema markup and page restructuring on dealer platforms. This is my main area on the team.
  • Conversion paths. Tracking and UX for forms, click-to-call, service leads and chat.

Results

Each dealership is compared with itself: its first tracked month against its latest completed month (August 2026 for most). The group includes every active new and used dealership with at least five months on record.

A score in the 50s or 60s is strong for a dealership that shares its city with other stores of the same brand, because Google splits visibility between nearby rooftops.

Google Business Profile and leads

Across 383 dealerships with a baseline audit, the average profile grade rose from 78.8 (C) to 91.9 (A), and 75% now hold an A. Across 451 dealerships in GA4, website leads (forms, calls, service requests and chats from all channels) went from 412 to 478 a month on average, +66 leads per store.

What I do not count as a win: raw organic sessions fell on average over the same period, even as visibility and rankings rose. That points to lower search volume in the market, not to lost rankings, and it is why I report visibility, rankings and leads together instead of traffic alone.

What this means for your business

Local businesses win the same way dealerships do: one relevant page for each city and service you want, a Google Business Profile that is complete and active, and a site Google can crawl without errors. Give it four to six months of steady work and the gains compound. If you have several locations or compete with look-alike businesses nearby, that is the plan I would build for you.
