How law firms show up first on Google and get cited when people ask AI.

People with a legal problem usually search before they call anyone. They ask questions, read answers and look for a lawyer they trust. Here is how a firm becomes the one they find, in Google and in AI answers.

Key takeaways

  • Legal clients research questions first, then look for a local lawyer. Your site needs pages for both moments.
  • One page per practice area, written in plain language, outranks a single list of services.
  • AI assistants answer legal questions by citing clear, trustworthy explanations, which a firm's own pages can provide.
  • Lawyer advertising rules apply online too. Avoid claims you cannot back up.

3Local ranking factors per Google: relevance, distance and prominence

How do people find a lawyer today?

Usually in two steps. First they try to understand their problem: what happens after a DUI arrest, how custody works, whether they have a case. Then they search for a lawyer for that problem near them and compare a few firms by reviews, experience and how clearly each one explains the process. Your site should serve both steps.

Many of those first questions are now asked to AI assistants, which summarize an answer and cite a few sources. A firm whose pages explain the law clearly in its state has a chance to be one of those sources. On the home page I explain how I approach this kind of visibility.

What decides which law firm shows up first on Google?

For near me searches, the Business Profile and the map decide much of it, through relevance, distance and prominence, including reviews. For practice area searches like workers comp lawyer in a city, your practice area pages decide it. Google rewards pages that show real expertise and help the reader, not pages written only to repeat keywords.

Google's guide to helpful, reliable content asks whether content shows first-hand expertise and whether a reader would trust it. For a law firm, that means pages written or reviewed by the attorneys, with clear explanations of the process, timelines and what the client should do next. Google's local ranking tips cover the map side.

How do AI assistants decide which law firms to cite?

AI answers to legal questions cite pages that explain the topic clearly and look trustworthy: specific to the state, written by identifiable attorneys, up to date and free of exaggerated claims. When someone asks for a recommendation, assistants also read reviews and directory listings. Google's AI Overviews draw from its index, with no special markup required.

The Pew Research study found that people clicked a regular result in 8% of visits with an AI summary, compared with 15% without one. For law firms, that means the summary itself is valuable real estate. Google's AI features page explains that normal SEO fundamentals are what make a page eligible to be cited.

Six steps for law firms to show up first in Google and AI

  • Create one page per practice area, and per main location if you have real offices there.
  • Answer the top questions clients ask in each area, in plain language, with a short direct answer first.
  • Show who wrote or reviewed each page, with the attorney's bar admission and experience.
  • Complete the Business Profile for each real office, with the right categories and hours.
  • Ask satisfied clients for reviews, following your state bar's rules on testimonials.
  • Measure calls and forms by practice area. The AI search explainer covers AI traffic too.

Why organic visibility matters with expensive legal clicks

Paid clicks in many practice areas are expensive, and every ad click is paid again tomorrow. Practice area pages that rank keep bringing potential clients without that cost. The chart shows the general shape on the same budget.

Monthly leads with the same budget every month

Both channels get $2,000 a month. Ads deliver from day one and stay flat; SEO starts slow and compounds. Illustrative model, not a forecast or a promise. Assumptions are listed under the charts.

What mistakes should law firms avoid?

Avoid claims you cannot prove, like best lawyer in the city or guaranteed results, which can conflict with professional conduct rules. Also avoid copied content across city pages, fake office addresses to appear in more cities and generic AI-written pages without attorney review. Each of these hurts either your rankings, your bar standing or both.

The ABA's Model Rule 7.1 prohibits false or misleading communications about a lawyer's services, and state rules may add more. I write marketing content for law firms as information, and attorneys should review anything that describes their services or results. The SEO content guide explains how I build pages that are both accurate and readable.

Where to start

Most firms see the quickest return from turning one generic services page into clear practice area pages. For the full approach, see the law firm SEO page, compare the monthly plans or book a free 30-minute diagnosis.

Frequently asked questions

Should each practice area have its own page?

Yes. People search for specific problems, and a dedicated page answers them better than one list of services.

Can AI assistants cite my law firm's pages?

Yes, if your pages explain topics clearly, are indexed and look trustworthy. Nobody can guarantee a citation.

Is it OK to say we are the best law firm?

Comparative claims you cannot back up can conflict with lawyer advertising rules. Check your state bar's rules.

Do directory listings help law firms?

Reputable legal directories add trust and sometimes clients. Keep your name, address and phone the same everywhere.

How long does law firm SEO take?

Competitive practice areas usually take several months. Local map results can improve sooner with a strong profile.
