Key takeaways
- Local SEO helps your business appear in Google Maps and in the map box at the top of local searches.
- Google ranks local results by relevance, distance and prominence, and you cannot pay for a better local ranking.
- Your Google Business Profile, your reviews and your website's service and location pages do most of the work.
- Local searchers are often ready to call or visit, so each position is worth a lot.
What is local SEO?
Local SEO is the work that helps a business appear when people nearby search for what it sells. It covers your Google Business Profile, your reviews, your listings in directories and the pages on your website about your services and areas. The goal is to show up in the map results and the organic results for local searches.
Picture three searches: "emergency plumber", "dentist near me" and "tacos open now". In each one, Google shows a map with a short list of businesses before the regular results. Those spots get a big share of the calls, the direction requests and the visits. Local SEO is how you earn one of them. On the home page I explain how local SEO fits with the rest of my work.
How does Google decide which local businesses to show?
Google's own help page names three factors: relevance, meaning how well your profile matches the search; distance, meaning how far you are from the searcher or the place they named; and prominence, meaning how well known and well reviewed your business is. Google also says you cannot request or pay for a better local ranking.
That last point matters. According to Google's local ranking tips, local results are based mainly on those three factors, and there is no way to buy a better position in them. Distance you cannot change much. Relevance and prominence you can: with complete and accurate information, the right categories, real photos, steady reviews and a website that clearly describes each service and area.
What local SEO work includes
Business Profile
Categories, services, hours, photos, products and posts, following Google's guidelines.
Reviews
A simple routine to ask every happy customer, and to answer every review in a calm, useful way.
Service and area pages
One clear page per main service and per area you serve, written for people, not a list of city names.
Listings
The same name, address and phone across directories, maps apps and industry sites.
Local schema
LocalBusiness structured data that tells Google your address, hours and type of business.
Tracking
Calls, direction requests and map positions measured by area, not only website visits.
Why is local SEO important for a business?
Because local searches come from people with an immediate need. Someone searching for a locksmith or an urgent care clinic wants to act now, and they usually choose from the first few options. If you are not on the map, a competitor gets that call. Unlike ads, a strong local presence keeps working every day without paying per click.
For a dental clinic in Medellín, I worked on the profile, the reviews routine and the service pages. After three months, the clinic held 56 top-3 positions on a Maps grid that measures rankings across the city, more than double where it started. Across hundreds of US dealerships, the average profile grade went from 78.8 to 91.9. The dealership results page shows how that work is measured.
Reviews deserve a warning. In 2024 the US Federal Trade Commission approved a final rule banning fake reviews and testimonials, including buying reviews. Real reviews, asked for honestly, are the only safe path.
How local visibility adds up over time
A profile with years of reviews and well ranked pages is hard for a new competitor to copy, and it keeps bringing calls without a cost per click. The chart shows that general pattern against ads on the same budget.
Both channels get $2,000 a month. Ads deliver from day one and stay flat; SEO starts slow and compounds. Illustrative model, not a forecast or a promise. Assumptions are listed under the charts.

Which businesses need local SEO?
Any business that serves customers in a specific area: shops, restaurants, clinics, law and accounting firms, and service businesses that travel to the customer, such as plumbers, roofers and HVAC companies. If people search for what you do with a city name or the words near me, local SEO is likely your best channel.
- You have a physical location, or you serve customers in defined areas.
- Competitors appear in the map box for your main service and you do not.
- Your profile has few reviews, old photos or wrong hours.
- Your website has one generic services page. Google's profile guidelines and good service pages work together.
How much does local SEO cost?
A local SEO audit with me costs $450 and covers your profile, reviews, listings and local pages against your top competitors. Ongoing local SEO is part of the monthly plans, from $1,000 a month, which include profile management, review routines, new service or area pages and monthly reporting.

Frequently asked questions
Is local SEO the same as Google Business Profile?
No. The profile is the most visible part, but local SEO also includes your reviews, listings, website pages and local links.
Can a business without a storefront do local SEO?
Yes. Service-area businesses can hide their address and set the areas they serve in their profile, then support them with pages on their website.
Should I create a profile for every city I serve?
No. Google only allows a profile where you have a real location or staff. For other areas, use service area settings and website pages.
How long does local SEO take?
Profile fixes can show changes in weeks. Competitive map positions usually take three to six months of steady work.
Can I buy reviews to rank faster?
No. Buying or faking reviews breaks Google's rules and the FTC rule on fake reviews, and it can get your profile suspended.
